For the second year in a row, The IEEE Photonics Society selects Professor Obayya among the six Distinguished Lecturers worldwide in the field of photonics

The IEEE Photonics Society announced the selection of Professor Salah Obayya, Director and Founder of the Center for Photonics and Smart Materials and the former Vice-Chair for Academic Affairs in Zewail City , as one of the Distinguished Lecturers for the second year in a row, among six chosen annually worldwide in the field of photonics.

 

The IEEE Photonics Society Distinguished Lecturer program was designed to honor excellent speakers who have made technical, industrial or entrepreneurial contributions of high quality to the field photonics.

The IEEE is the leading professional association for the advancement of technology. With more than 400,000 members in more than 160 countries, IEEE is the world's largest technical professional society. Through its global membership, IEEE is a leading authority on areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power, consumer electronics, and many other technical areas. Members rely on IEEE as a source of technical and professional information, resources, and services.

 

Obayya expressed his gratitude and appreciation to his research team at Zewail City's Center for Photonics and Smart Materials, and all his post graduate students in Egypt and UK, some of whom are now occupying prestigious positions in academia and industry, for being his partners in success. Obayya added that this prestigious recognition reflects the significant role of the Egyptian state in placing the scientific research high on its agenda, in line with the current worldwide scientific renaissance we are experiencing.

About Professor Obayya

Professor Salah is currently Chair Professor and Founding Director of Center for Photonics and Smart Materials (CPSM) at Zewail City of Science, Technology and Innovation and former Vice-Chair for Academic Affairs and Director-General of Research Institutes, prior to which he held several academic positions in several universities in the UK.

 

In 2019, Obayya was elected as the first Arab and African Fellow of the Optical Society of America (OSA) in 2019. This is in addition to his role in several other scientific societies, including; Fellow of International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), USA, IEEE, Fellow of IEEE Photonics Society, January 2021, Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), USA, Fellow of African Academy of Science (AAS), 2018. Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology, IET (formerly FIEE), UK, 2010, elected Fellow of The Institute of Physics (IoP), UK, 2010, elected Fellow of The Higher Education Academy, UK, member of Board of Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (Egypt’s National Academy of Science), Member of Wales Institute of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (WIMCS), UK, and Board Member of Applied Computational Electromganetic Society (ACES).

 

In recognition of his remarkable research achievements, Obayya was awarded several national and international awards and recognitions; 

The African Union Kwame Nkrumah Continental Award for Scientific Excellence in 2020 - 2021

Medal of Science and Arts of the first class year 2021, Egypt
