Zewail City: hub for high caliber Egyptians with international expertise

High caliber academics in various fields of research and development are joining the team of international expertise at the City. The latest group is in the area of biophysics, nanoscience, and biotechnology.

Dr. Fareed Aboul-ela

Aboul-ela is appointed associate professor of physics. He obtained his Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley.

At The University od Science and Technology he will be involved in teaching biophysics, and his research will be on Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), RNA binding, and biophysical mechanisms of riboswitch RNA folding.

Dr. Mohamed Alkordi is appointed associate professor of chemistry with emphasis on nanoscience of supramolecular chemistry and coordination polymers. He graduated from the University of South Florida, Tampa, with a Ph.D. degree in chemistry. He also participated in the SURF program at Caltech.

Before joining The University of Science and Technology, he was a postdoctoral fellow at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).  His teaching experience combined with his course work and research background in widely different areas of chemical sciences will be of special value to both the university and Research Centres.

Dr. Tamer Salem will join the University as associate professor of biology. He obtained his Ph.D. in microbiology and cell science from the University of Florida. He was research associate at a number of universities including Michigan State University in East Lansing, USA.

At the City, his experience with gene expression and biotechnology will add to the pool of knowledge needed for multidisciplinary science. In 2010, he published a book titled " RNA Interference in insect cells infected with baculovirus: a universal transgene silencing approach".

"It gives me great pleasure to welcome Drs. Aboul-Ela, Alkordi, and Salem on board" said Dr. Sherif Sedky, Provost of The University. "The expertise of the appointed faculty is well aligned with the City's vision, which is to have a strong link to both the University and the Research Centers. Their contribution surely will help us reach our objective of establishing a world class University", he continued.
