Prof. Sherif Sedky's Biography
In January 2017, the Board of Directors (BoD) of Zewail City of Science and Technology selected Prof. Sherif Sedky, Provost of The American University in Cairo (AUC), to serve as Zewail City’s Executive President.
Sedky’s return is a continuation to his inspiring contributions since he was the Founding Provost and Acting President of Zewail City of Science and Technology. Joining Egypt’s National Project for Scientific Renaissance from April 2012 until September 2014, he was then appointed as the Academic President of the City until April 2015.
Sedky’s academic career started in 1992 when he received his Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering, with highest distinction and honors, from Cairo University. He earned a Master of Science degree from Cairo University and a second one from Katholiek Universiteit in Belgium, where he also received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in microelectronics. He joined Cairo University as an instructor in 1999. In spring 2002, he was invited to be a visiting researcher at the University of California, Berkeley.
In fall 2002, Sedky was appointed as instructor at the AUC, then he was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2004, and in 2008 he became a Professor. In spring 2010, Sedky was appointed to be the Director of AUC's Yousef Jameel Science and Technology Research Center. In fall 2011, he was appointed as Associate Dean of graduate studies and research at the School of Sciences and Engineering at the AUC. Finally, Sedky served as AUC’s Provost from April 2015 until February 2017. He was also a visiting professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, during summer 2001, and continued in this position from 2003 – 2008. In summer 2009, 2010 and 2011 he was a visiting Professor at Stanford University.
In recognition of his scientific contributions, Sedky was awarded Abdul Hameed Shoman Prize for Arab Scientists, in Engineering Sciences, and in 2007 Excellence in Research and Creative Endeavors awarded by the AUC. He is also a recipient of the Egyptian State Incentive Award in advanced technological sciences in 2002, and the Graduate Studies Award of Excellence from Cairo University in 1996. Sedky’s biography is listed in Marquis Who’s Who in the World.
In addition to holding 13 patents related to the field of electronic engineering, Sedky authored and coauthored over 100 publications in high impact journals and international conferences. Sedky’s H-index is 21 and his work was cited 1600 times.
In addition to his published research papers, Sedky has authored a book titled: “Post-processing Techniques for Integrated MEMS”, which explains the various technologies for integrated micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) with stimulated electrical circuits. He also authored a chapter in a book related to the computational technology and its applications in 1999.
