Novel pathway to enhance performance of Solar Cells

The high impact factor journal “Applied Surface Science" has recently published a new joint research paper which is a collaboration between the Photonics and Smart Materials Center team led by Prof. Salah Obayya and the University of Genoa, Italy, for the purpose of increasing the efficiency of solar cells based on silicon devices using the technology of glass brazed (Bragg Gratings). The silicon surface is covered with a thin layer of packed glass where the patterns are made with periodic microfluidic spacers which contribute to increasing the absorption of photons within the silicon surface. The new technology has contributed in enhancing the electrical efficiency of solar cells to a 25% more than traditional similar technologies.
